Summer 2025 Wrap-Up at Redion: Interventions on the Rise

At a glance

Redion Belgium experienced a very busy summer 2025, with growth in the number of medical and technical cases.

The strong turnout for both nearby and far-flung destinations, along with extreme weather conditions in southern Europe, led to a high number of assistance cases.

The summer holidays were very busy at Redion Belgium. After a gloomy spring, many Belgians sought out the sun and chose either nearby or far-away destinations. But because of high temperatures, many medical cases were once again opened in the hottest regions of Europe.

In this article, we share Redion Belgium's summer trends:

  • During the summer holidays (June 27 to August 27), Redion Belgium opened more medical cases (+23%) and provided more technical assistance abroad (+25%) than during summer 2024. This marks a sharp increase for the third year running.
  • In regions affected by heatwaves, many medical cases were opened for gastrointestinal issues, heart problems and heatstroke.
  • Redion received an average of more than 2,750 calls per day across all its assistance activities. During the summer months, more than 10,000 requests were also received via its assistance app. Call peaks were recorded right after the long weekend of July 21 and around the transition weekends between July and August.

Medical cases: another increase compared to last year

Between June 27 and August 27, Redion recorded a 23% increase in medical cases abroad compared to the same period in 2024. Last year already saw a notable 16% increase compared to summer 2023.

Due to the prolonged heatwaves in southern Europe, more specific medical cases were opened in the affected countries: among younger people (under 20), an increase in gastric and intestinal problems was observed. Among people over 50, cases were more often related to heart and respiratory problems, as well as neurological disorders (notably resulting from heatstroke). The number of infections and dermatological problems also increased.

Destinations: In Europe, the majority of medical cases were opened in France (19%), Spain (mainland Spain and the islands: 12%), Italy (7%), Greece (4%) and Turkey (4%).
As for far-flung destinations, Thailand tops the list (5%), followed by the United States (4%), Indonesia (4%) and Morocco (3%).
Overall, it's clear that holidaymakers are increasingly spreading out across the world, sometimes to take part in activities they are poorly or insufficiently prepared for, and in places where medical infrastructure is inadequate, which can make medical assistance more complex.

Conditions: The most common medical problems were trauma (fractures, injuries, sprains… : 44%), infections (15%), gastrointestinal problems (12%), and heart, respiratory, dermatological and neurological problems (for example heatstroke), each at 4%.

Technical assistance for vehicles: also sharply up

Abroad, Redion recorded a 25% increase in technical interventions on vehicles between June 27 and August 27, 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. 2023 and 2022 were already record years.

This sharp increase is explained by several factors: the large number of Belgians who took to the road this year (sometimes after a last-minute booking), the aging combustion-engine vehicle fleet (which can lead to more problems), and the recent expansion of Redion's customer portfolio for technical assistance.

Destinations:
Most technical interventions abroad (top 6) took place in France (37%), the Netherlands (23%), Spain (10%), Germany (7%), and Italy and Luxembourg (6% each).

Technical problems: The most common technical interventions were engine breakdowns and battery/starting problems (70%), technical problems caused by carelessness (keys locked in the vehicle, wrong fuel, tire failure…) (20%), and accidents (9%).

Roadside technical assistance in Belgium

On the national front, Redion also opened more technical breakdown cases during the June 27 to August 27 period than last year (+3% compared to last year). As we know, school holidays for French-speaking Belgians only started on July 5 (a week later than for Dutch-speaking Belgians) and ended on August 24.

Redion Belgium responds worldwide

Redion Belgium once again opened assistance cases on every continent this summer. The map below shows that assistance requests poured in from all over the world. It illustrates, by color code, the combined total of medical cases recorded worldwide and technical interventions carried out on vehicles in Europe.
