How much does medical assistance cost?
Here are 5 examples of assistance cases and the costs they generated for the assistance company. These are fairly "typical" cases.
For the customers, it only cost them their travel insurance premium, as everything else was fully covered...
1. Early return following a death
Situation: The grandfather passes away in Belgium while the member is on Erasmus in Finland.
Total cost of the intervention: €832: the assistance provider organises and covers the round trip to attend the funeral.\
2. Fall, fractures and hospitalisation
Situation: A family of four is on holiday in Marbella, Spain. The father falls off a low wall onto his back. He breaks 4 ribs and is hospitalised.
Total cost of the intervention: €2,995: the father is discharged from hospital after a few days, but isn't allowed to fly for 2 to 3 weeks because of a lung injury. He asks to return by train in several stages with his eldest son. The assistance company's medical coordinator agrees. The patient takes the train and stays two nights along the way in Barcelona. The assistance provider covers the medical costs as well as his repatriation.
3. Early return home and vehicle repatriation
Situation: A retired couple is on holiday in Bordeaux and the husband has repeated fainting spells requiring hospitalisation.
Total cost of the intervention: €5,226: a driver from the assistance company is sent to bring the vehicle and luggage back to the members' home in Belgium. After 5 days in hospital, the assistance provider settles the medical costs (after the health insurance fund has contributed) and brings the husband and wife (who wishes to accompany him) back by ambulance to the hospital nearest their home in Belgium. Admission to the hospital in Belgium was arranged in advance by the assistance provider.
4. Car accident, hospitalisation and early return of travellers
Situation: A family is touring Scotland by car when their vehicle is involved in an accident. The driver suffers a head injury. The other passengers are luckier and escape unharmed.
Total cost of the intervention: €10,566: the driver is taken to the nearest hospital. After a medical examination, the decision is made to repatriate her along with those travelling with her. The assistance provider sends a nurse on site to accompany the repatriated patient. All travellers are repatriated by plane. The patient is transported on a stretcher with personalised medical support. On arrival in Belgium, she is immediately transferred to the hospital near her home.
The car was also repatriated by the assistance company after being repaired.
5. Appendicitis in the USA and an extended stay
Situation: A father and his ten-year-old son are on holiday in New York City. The son has an appendicitis attack. He has to be operated on locally and is hospitalised for 4 days afterwards.
Total cost of the intervention: €30,455: the assistance provider covers the extended hotel stay for the father, as well as the medical costs and the cost of changing the return flights for father and son.
