Tips for visiting Porto as a family
Porto is a family-friendly city, but a few precautions will make your stay more comfortable.
Climate: the climate is of course a very important factor. The city is by the sea, but temperatures can climb very high in summer, and sometimes in spring or autumn too. So bring hats, sun cream, water bottles, and plan for breaks in the shade to avoid heat exhaustion.
Budget: as for budget, the city remains affordable. Restaurants often offer children's menus, and many attractions, such as some museums or parks, are free. Also note that the Andante card lets you use the metro, buses and funicular at a reduced rate... Handy for the whole family!
Walking: another important point: in the city centre, getting around always takes a bit of organisation, as the cobbled streets and steep slopes can make using a standard pushchair difficult. A compact pushchair or a baby carrier is therefore preferable.
Safety: Porto is a safe city. So you can wander around calmly all day long, but it's best to plan outings for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the strongest heat.
Tourism: lastly, book visits to the most famous spots well in advance... The city is a victim of its own success, and crowds are large during school holidays.
Must-sees in Porto to visit with children
In Porto, many of the must-sees are likely to appeal to children too.
Start by strolling through Ribeira, the iconic district that runs along the Douro. Its colourful facades and little squares appeal even to the youngest visitors. For a top-notch visit, the famous six bridges cruise lets you admire Porto from the water... A real treat for the little ones. The cruise costs €18 per adult, and €9 per child aged 4 to 12.
Then cross the majestic Dom Luís Bridge on foot: the panoramic view over the city and Vila Nova de Gaia will amaze young and old alike.
The whole family will be fascinated by Livraria Lello, known for its spectacular staircase and its atmosphere worthy of Harry Potter. Remember to book ahead... The visit is free, but the place is small and hugely popular.
Sé Cathedral and the historic centre are also worth the detour. The atmosphere, as well as the architecture and the blue azulejo tiles, will impress adults and curious children alike. There's always something going on, and once again, it's all free.
For a nature break, head to the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal, another free gem not far from the centre. The free-roaming peacocks, fountains and picnic areas offer a welcome breath of fresh air between sightseeing stops.
Note that to enrich your discovery and make things easier for yourself, you can also opt for a guided walking tour in French with Bonjour Porto. You'll be able to explore the city while enjoying explanations suited to the whole family.
A few special activities for children
In Porto, there are plenty of ways to keep children happy.
For an aquatic adventure, head to Sea Life Porto. This modern aquarium, open from 10am to 6pm or 7pm, lets you observe sharks, rays and jellyfish in a fascinating setting... Prices are €18.50 for those over 12, and €13.50 for children aged 2 to 11.
World of Discoveries is a very good interactive museum that will take you back to the age of the great Portuguese explorers for around an hour. Budget €18 per adult, and €12 for children over 4.
Fancy a really original way to see the city? The 5D cinema experience Look at Porto is ideal. In a richly equipped room, a dynamic video presents the city with various sensory effects (moving seats, water jets, wind, and the scents of the city...). The venue is open every day from 9.30am to 6pm and costs only around ten euros per person.
For a good laugh, head to the 3D Fun Art Museum. In this park, art and fun leap off the walls: giant sets, bright colours and surprising perspectives are all opportunities for memorable photos! Open every day from 10am to 7pm, it costs €13 per adult and €9 for children aged 5 to 12.
And to end the day on a magical note, don't miss the Spiritus Light Show at Clérigos Church, another must-see in the city. This multimedia show transforms the interior of this monument into a play of light, music and emotion... A sensory journey inspired by a poem by Álvaro de Campos. The experience lasts around 30 minutes and costs €10 per person. Shows take place every 45 minutes between 6pm and 9.45pm. It's best to arrive 10 minutes before it starts so you don't miss anything!
One last tip: don't forget to try the country's speciality as a family, "pasteis de nata" (crispy puff pastry with a creamy filling made from egg yolks, milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon). You'll love it!
