A number plate for everyone
For the “modest” sum of 1,000 euros, you can choose a combination of up to 8 characters. However, you need to take several factors into account:
- Groups of digits or letters must be separated by a hyphen (which counts as one character);
- Your personalised number plate must contain at least one letter;
- Plates with racist or offensive content, or referring to a political party, are forbidden;
- Certain formats are banned to avoid any possible confusion with special plates (such as those of diplomatic corps, temporary plates, etc.).
You'll find all the rules on the subject and the application forms on the government website.
First come, first served
The principle governing the granting of your plate is “first come, first served”. If the combination you request already exists, your application will be refused.
After submitting your application and paying the fee, your plate will be sent by post for a sum of 30 euros.
For those who would like to use letters only, this will be possible from 30 June 2014.
Good to know
If your plate is stolen or destroyed, you cannot request a duplicate. You will therefore need to apply for (and pay for) a new personalised number plate.
