Brussels LEZ

At a glance

Brussels has become a "low emission zone" (LEZ). Is your vehicle affected?

Since 1 January 2018, the Brussels-Capital Region has become a "low emission zone" (LEZ).

Unlike other cities, such as Antwerp, where the rule was introduced in February 2017 for the entire vehicle fleet, in Brussels the regulation is progressive and rolled out over several years. Several European cities, including London and Paris, also have regulations limiting access to their city centre for the most polluting vehicles. Other cities will follow.

Which part of Brussels is affected by the LEZ?

The LEZ applies in the 19 municipalities that are part of the Brussels-Capital Region, with the exception of the Ring and certain roads leading to park-and-ride car parks (Céria-Coovi car park, Stalle car park, Kraainem car park).

Which vehicles are affected by the Brussels LEZ regulation?

  • LEZAccess to the LEZ concerns all private vehicles, as well as vans of ≤ 3.5 tonnes and buses and coaches. Older diesel vehicles are the main target of the regulation.
  • The regulation also applies to vehicles registered abroad. From summer 2018, these vehicles will need to be registered in order to enter the LEZ.
  • The regulation applies 24/7.
  • Vehicles running on gas (CNG and LPG) are treated the same as petrol vehicles.
  • Access to the LEZ will always remain possible for affected vehicles, as long as the driver has purchased a day pass (maximum access of 8 days/year).
  • The LEZ category your vehicle belongs to is stated on the vehicle registration certificate.

The different phases of implementation

The regulation is being rolled out in several phases.
From 01/01/2020, the ban affects diesel vehicles up to standard 3.
Other vehicle categories will follow in subsequent years.

Exceptional measures are possible for certain types of vehicles.
Vehicles entering the Brussels-Capital Region are monitored by cameras placed at various points around the city.
