How to File a Complaint About Your Trip?

At a glance

What should you do if your trip turns into a nightmare? How and to whom should you turn to file a complaint about your trip?

A trip usually brings a feeling of freedom, joy and relaxation. That's true for the vast majority of travellers.
But for a small number, the trip may start badly (or not at all), or the situation on the spot may not match what was planned at all.

In that case, it's important to react effectively and, first of all, to try to find an amicable solution. If that attempt fails, it can sometimes be useful to file a complaint, request financial compensation or a refund.

How and to whom should you turn to file a complaint about your trip?

The Federal Public Service Economy (SPF Economie) has published a wealth of information and practical advice for travellers on its website. You will find useful information there for the following situations:

  • Booking a flight (cancelled flight, delayed flight, overbooking)
  • Booking a trip, accommodation (hotel, holiday home...), an activity (sports, leisure, sightseeing, excursion). What to do in case of a change to the trip, cancellation of the trip, price change, non-conformity with the order form, ...?
  • What to do in the event of the tour operator's or transport company's bankruptcy?
  • How can you resolve a problem on the spot? How can you make sure you have the necessary evidence and how do you file a complaint?
  • What to do in the event of the insolvency of the travel operator?
  • Who can help you if you have a dispute? Which bodies should you contact? What is the procedure?
  • What are the different steps when you want to file a complaint?
  • ...

You will find the answers to these questions and all useful information by clicking the following link on the SPF Economie website: https://economie.fgov.be/fr/themes/protection-des-consommateurs/voyages/vos-droits-en-tant-que

You will also find template letters you can use as inspiration when corresponding with the other party, and a very useful explanatory brochure.
